HEBRON, Ky. - Junior Michael Coriasso and sophomore Jakob Ziegler posted top-10 finishes to lead the Oakland University men's golf team to its first tournament win with an overall score of 871 (+7) at the Bearcat Invitational on Tuesday at Traditions Golf Club (Par 72, 7,103 yards). Coriasso shot even par over his final two rounds (73-71) to finish in a tie for sixth place (217/+1), while Ziegler carded a 1-over-par score in the second and third rounds to finish with a score of 217 (+2) and in a tie for eighth place.
"I am so proud of the guys," said head coach Brian Costello. "We have been close before, but we finally closed the deal. This program has come a long way over the past three years and it is all due to the hard work and dedication of this group. I expect us to contiue to work hard and be ready for our league championship in the spring. We know we can win and that is a big part of being successful."
OU led by three shots after the second round completed this morning and held off a late-charging Northern Illinois (873/+9) by two shots. NIU's Jeff Dick took home medalist honors with a final day score of 2-under-par and finished the tournament at 7-under-par (209).
Senior Travis Peitz regrouped after a difficult 83 in the first 18 holes with scores of 73 and 74 in the second and third rounds. Sophomore transfer Phil Gieseker finished with a pair of 75 scores today after shooting 2-under-par 70 in the first round and finished in a tie for 15th place (220/+4). Senior Michael Marks carded his first round under par with a 71 in the middle round.
The 871 ranks as the seventh-lowest 54-hole score in school history. The Grizzlies last tournament win came at the Bellarmine Intercollegiate on March 27, 2007.
Oakland will be in action this Friday as the Golden Grizzlies play in a dual match against the University of Detroit Mercy. The match will be 18 holes at Detroit Golf Club and will tee off at 2 p.m.
