SHREVEPORT, La. - Senior Melissa Jeltema scored 16 of her 24 points in the second half and senior Hanna Reising notched 12 points and tied a season-high four assists off the bench as the Oakland University women's basketball team (6-9, 3-1 Summit League) defeated Centenary (1-15, 0-5 Summit League) with a 75-32 decision Saturday evening at the Gold Dome.
"I am very proud of our intensity throughout the whole game," said head coach Beckie Francis. "We were a very unselfish team, with 26 of our 28 baskets being assisted tonight."
After leading 5-2 in the early minutes, the Golden Grizzlies went on a 12-0 scoring run that put the Black and Gold up 17-2 and held the Ladies without a basket for six straight minutes. From there, Oakland outscored the Ladies 17-2 in the remainder of the half and held them without a point in the last nine minutes for a 34-8 lead after the half.
The Golden Grizzlies continued to go full speed ahead in the second half, leading by as many as 42 points before claiming the 75-32 victory. Jeltema's second half surge helped keep her double-digit scoring streak alive into 30 straight games.
Senior Riikka Terava scored eight points, a new season-high, while freshman Victoria Lipscomb also scored eight points and added four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Bethany Watterworth rounded out Oakland's top scorers with eight points of her own, plus five assists.
The Ladies were led by Ashley Jackson, who just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Golden Grizzlies held a commanding 40-24 lead on the boards and forced 24 turnovers, compared to their 12, scoring 23 points off those Centenary throwaways. Oakland shot 48 percent from the field, while the Ladies shot 27 percent.
The Golden Grizzlies wrap up their road trip when they take on Oral Roberts (9-7, 3-2 Summit League) on Monday, Jan. 11, for a tip scheduled for 8:05 p.m. EST at the Mabee Center. The game can be viewed via Live Stats and All Access at www.ougrizzlies.com.
