FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Freshman Whitney Sarkis made five saves in net for OU, but it wasn't enough to stop the attack of New Mexico (5-0-0), as the Oakland University women's soccer (2-2-0) team dropped a 2-0 decision Sunday afternoon at the Mountain Classic at Lumberjack Stadium.
The Lobos struck first at the 18:57 mark when Jennifer Williams took advantage of a throw in and banked the shot off the post from 30 yards out to give New Mexico the early 1-0 advantage.
The Golden Grizzlies a chance to even the score in the first half with a shot by junior Dani Haelewyn at 20:42, but was bested by goalkeeper Kelli Cornell and the score remained 1-0 going into halftime.
New Mexico kept up the attack in the second half and notched another goal at 62:43 when Zaneta Wyne headed the ball into the net off a set piece from 25 yards out to bring the game to what would become its 2-0 final score.
The Golden Grizzlies fired off two shots on goal in the second half, courtesy of freshman Brianna Bowery and sophomore Jessica Conrad at 57:15 and 76:58, respectively, but neither could get past Cornell to put OU on the board.
Oakland was outshot by the Lobos 12-6 and launched three shots on goal compared to New Mexico's seven. They also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks compared to OU, but committed 14 fouls to Oakland's eight.
The Golden Grizzlies will return home on Sunday, Sept. 13 to take on Western Michigan University at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac, Mich. The match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start and can be followed on Gametracker at www.ougrizzlies.com.
