PONTIAC, Mich. - Sophomore goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt made seven saves and senior Stefan St. Louis led the Golden Grizzlies with three shots on goal as the Oakland University men's soccer team (2-0-1) battled No. 18 University of Dayton (0-1-1) to a 0-0 tie Sunday evening at the Ultimate Soccer Arena.
"It was a war out there," said head coach Eric Pogue. "It was a battle between two good teams and top to bottom, everybody gave a great effort. To play three top quality teams in UAB, SIU-Edwardsville and Dayton all in one week and come away with a 2-0-1 record and play as well as we did, I am very happy."
The first half set the tone for how evenly matched the game would be when both teams each fired 12 shots and were almost equal in shots on goal, with four for OU and three for Dayton.
The second half saw Hildebrandt being faced with five shots on goal, but the Livonia, Mich. native didn't let anything past him and with Dayton goalkeeper Josh Lavallee saving all three of the second half shots being fired at him, the game was sent into its first overtime period.
In the first round of extra minutes, neither team got a shot off, thus leading to a second overtime, where OU fired one shot and the Flyers two, but none landed on goal, thus bringing the match to a 0-0 stalemate.
Oakland and Dayton were nearly equal in shots, with the Golden Grizzlies just edging out the Flyers 25-24, while Dayton held the advantage in shots on goal 8-7.Both teams were equal in fouls, 8-8, but Dayton led the way in corner kicks with 13, compared to Oakland's two.
The Golden Grizzlies will next travel to DeKalb, Ill. to compete in the NIU adidas/Magnuson Inn and Suites Invitational on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 11 and 13 on the campus of Northern Illinois University. Both matches are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. starts.
