BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Adrienne Leone tallied a season-best 24 kills and hit .375, while sophomore Ashley Nevelle dished out 45 assists along with 15 digs to lead the Oakland University volleyball team (9-2) to a 3-1 victory over Bowling Green (7-7) on Tuesday night at Anderson Arena.
The win, OU's ninth this season, gives the Golden Grizzlies the highest win total of the Division I era.
"Adrienne was huge for us tonight," said OU head coach Rob Beam. "Obviously a 24-kill performance stands out, but she did a great job in serve receive and defense too. I think Ashley was also outstanding. She executed our game plan perfectly and found ways for our hitters to score at key times."
The Golden Grizzlies claimed a 25-16 victory in the opening set before BGSU knotted the match with a 25-22 win in the second set. However, the Golden Grizzlies came back with a thrilling 26-24 victory in the third set and closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth.
Freshman Meghan Bray joined Leone in double-digit kills with 10. Junior Brittany Dunn also added 10 digs in the match. Oakland held a .300 to .225 hitting advantage for the match, as the Golden Grizzlies hit above .200 in each set. Sophomore Allison Bell turned in five blocks (one solo, four assisted) to lead an OU effort that notched nine total team blocks.
Freshman Brittany Holbrook hit .467 with eight kills, while sophomore Jenna Lange also contributed a nine-kill effort, hitting .250.
"I am very proud of our team and their performance tonight," added Beam. "Bowling Green has a tremendous history as a program and winning a match against them is a signature win for our team."
The Golden Grizzlies will return to action this coming weekend, as they return to Summit League play at Centenary and Oral Roberts this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25 and 26. Both matches are set to begin at 8 p.m.
