PONTIAC, Mich. - Junior Dani Haelewyn and sophomore Deanna Colarossi both fired four shots, but none were able to find the back of the net as the Oakland University women's soccer team (2-3) found itself on the short end of a 2-0 shutout by the Western Michigan Broncos (2-2-1) on Sunday at the Ultimate Soccer Arena.
"I thought we started with not very much intensity," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "I'm not sure whether it's playing indoors or what. We weren't able to pass or keep possession, and we gave away two bad goals. Once you do that, it's hard to get back into it."
Western Michigan broke through in the ninth minute of play as Nikolette Rivera took a rebound from a shot taken by Anna Cicerone to give the Broncos an early 1-0 lead. WMU pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute as Jackie Drees pushed one past OU keeper Shannon Coley.
Both teams were scoreless in the second half, as OU held WMU without a shot on goal in the second half.
Oakland had several opportunities, holding a 18-12 advantage in shots, and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. OU's best opportunity came in the 75th minute, when a shot by Colarossi hit off the crossbar, and after getting her own rebound, Colarossi's second shot banked off the post.
The Golden Grizzlies will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 16 as they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face Michigan. A 5:30 p.m. kickoff is scheduled. OU's next home game will be on Friday, Oct. 2 as the Golden Grizzlies host UMKC at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in a special fan blackout game. All fans are encouraged to wear black and bring friends and family as OU attempts to have over 1,000 fans in attendance.
