ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Adrienne Leone notched 16 kills to lead the Black team, while freshman Meghan Bray added 11 kills to lead the Gold team, as Black picked up a 2-1 victory in the OU Black and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
"I'm really pleased with the amount of offense and what we're seeing coming together in terms of our system," said head coach Rob Beam. "I think we got a ton of defensive transition opportunities, I just want to see our team improve on killing those balls. We had 69 and 63 digs, which is outstanding defensively, and I want to see us turn that into points offensively."
The Black team won the opening set 26-24, but Gold rallied with a 25-22 win in set two. Black won the decisive third set 25-22.
Junior Samantha Filipek dished out 25 assists for black, while sophomore Ashley Nevelle dished out 22 assists for Gold. Freshman Alli Kirk led all players with 19 digs for the gold squad, while sophomore Ashleigh Slemmer (Gold) and freshman Amber Miehlke (Black) had 14, Filipek and Brittany Dunn (Black) added 13 digs, while both Leone and freshman Jillian Kulka (Black) had 10 digs.
"I think this is one of those natural steps along the line," added Beam. "I thought that with our entire roster playing for three whole sets, we played very well. We'll take a look at our film, take a look at our numbers, and then go into practice on Monday to prepare for our first competition."
The Golden Grizzlies will open their regular season on Friday, Aug. 28, as they travel to Morgantown, W. Va., for the West Virginia University Classic. OU will face WVU on Friday at 7 p.m., while facing both St. Francis (Pa.) and Towson on Saturday.
