ROCHESTER, Mich. - Seniors Andrew Stafford and Dan Ryan, sophomore Ryan Waldhart and freshman Tim Ryan all collected two hits, but the Golden Grizzlies could not overcome the offensive effort of the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (24-12, 13-2 Summit League) as the Oakland University baseball team (19-29, 8-14 Summit League) dropped a 10-6 decision to Oral Roberts on Saturday at the OU Baseball Field.
The game, originally scheduled to be played as part of a doubleheader, was delayed by over two hours due to rain. The scheduled nightcap will be made up Sunday.
It was the Golden Eagles hitting paydirt first, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third on RBI singles by Juan Martinez and P.J. Sequeira, claiming an early 2-0 lead. A three-run homer by Seth Furmanek gave ORU a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but the Golden Grizzlies rallied in the bottom of the fourth using an RBI single by Ryan, a two-run single by senior Justin Wilson, an RBI single by sophomore Tommy Jablonski, and an RBI grounder by Stafford to knot the game at 5-5 after four innings.
However, ORU continued its offensive onslaught, scoring a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to claim a 9-5 lead after six. ORU scored another run in the top of the eighth on a solo homer by Sequeira to pull ahead 10-5, and the Golden Grizzlies were able to tally one more run on an RBI single by Stafford in the bottom of the eighth.
Freshman Kyle Teague suffered the loss for OU, falling to 0-4 on the year after surrendering nine runs, all earned, on 12 hits in 5.1 innings of work. Sophomore Jeff Gorecki was effective in relief, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits.
The Golden Grizzlies and Golden Eagles will conclude their four-game set with a noon doubleheader on Sunday, May 10.
