ROCHESTER, Mich. - Seniors Justin Wilson and Dan Ryan went 3-for-5, while sophomore Tommy Jablonski went 3-for-4 as the Oakland University baseball team (18-28) used five eighth-inning runs to rally past the Olivet Comets (19-17), taking a 9-5 victory on Wednesday at the OU Baseball Field.
Olivet got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning to take a quick 3-0 lead. A fielding error and an RBI single by Ryan pulled OU to within 3-2, and the Golden Grizzlies claimed the lead just a few innings later, when in the bottom of the fourth, Wilson clubbed a two-run shot to left-center that gave OU a 4-3 advantage.
However, the Comets quickly responded, tying the contest at 4-4 on an RBI double by Brandon Goodman, and then Olivet claimed the lead on an RBI single by Erik McCloud.
Olivet held the 5-4 lead until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Wilson's RBI double tied the contest, and Jablonski gave OU the lead with an RBI double of his own.
Senior Andrew Stafford then belted a two-run homer to push the OU lead to 8-4, and the Golden Grizzlies extended their lead to 9-4 later in the inning as D.J. Jarrad singled up the middle.
Jarrad had two hits in the win. Sophomore Aaron Wick picked up the win, improving to 3-3 on the year after throwing a hitless eighth inning. Wick combined with relievers Mark Leichtman, Jake Arendsen, Greg Welke, Kyle Teague, and Matt LaMothe to hold the Comets off the board over the final four innings of the contest.
The Golden Grizzlies will close out the home portion of their 2009 schedule with a four-game set against Oral Roberts this weekend on the OU Baseball Field. First pitch of Friday's opening game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
