ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Jessica Granger (9-8) tossed her second consecutive complete-game shutout, scattering three hits and fanned nine, and senior Julie Owen went 2-for-3, with one RBI, to lead Oakland University (12-18, 5-5) to a 2-0 victory over Summit League foe Southern Utah University (14-21, 5-5) on Friday at the OU Softball Complex.
"Jes really pitched well today," said OU coach Glenn MacDonald. "She had command of the entire game and her change-up had them off balance. We also got some timely hits that allowed us to scratch a couple of runs across."
Granger, a native of Troy, Mich., tied the all-time school record this afternoon, pushing her strikeout total to 425, matching the record held by Nicole Marzano (2002-05). She now has 38 wins in her career, one shy of the OU record of 39, held by Julie Anderson (2000-03).
Sophomore Alyssa Deacon finished the game 1-for-1, with one walk and a sacrifice bunt. Junior Haley Emerson had a pinch-hit bunt single for the Golden Grizzlies to pace Oakland offensively.
SUU's Kristina Brooks (10-17) tossed a complete game for the Thunderbirds, allowing just four hits, two earned runs and fanned eight.
The Grizzlies broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run on a bunt single by Emerson. Owen began the inning with a single to right field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Caitlin Lynch and moved over to third base on a fly out by junior Katie Dreyer, eventually scoring on a bunt single to first base.
OU pushed an insurance run across in the fifth inning on a bloop single by Owen that witnessed a tough collision by the T-Bird shortstop and left fielder that allowed sophomore pinch runner Dayna Peters to score who reached second base on a sac bunt by Deacon and came in to run for junior Anne Cicchini who was hit-by-a-pitch as the lead went to 2-0.
Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was called off and will be played at Noon tomorrow. The third and final game of the series will commence immediately following the first game. All OU softball games can be followed on Gametracker at www.ougrizzlies.com.
