KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Senior Justin Wilson went 3-for-5, senior Andrew Stafford went 2-for-5, and senior Shane McCatty tossed three scoreless innings in relief, but it was not enough as the Oakland University baseball team (7-12) dropped a 3-2 decision to Western Michigan (6-17) in 11 innings at Robert J. Bobb Stadium.
In a game that was a pitchers' duel down the stretch, OU sophomore Jeff Gorecki and WMU starter Casey Hall dueled through the opening innings. Gorecki went 5.0 innings, allowing just one run on one hit, walking one and fanning three. The Broncos got on the board in the second inning as Max Kelmigian led off with a triple, and was quickly brought home on an RBI grounder by Jamie Simpson.
The Golden Grizzlies tied the game in the top of the sixth inning after Wilson led off with a double, was bunted over to third, and brought home on an RBI grounder by Tommy Jablonski. The run was the lone run OU would score off Hall in his six innings of work.
The game stayed tied until the eighth inning, as Wilson hit a one-out single, and then picked up his 25th consecutive successful stolen base to move to second base. He later scored on an RBI single by Stafford, giving OU a 2-1 lead. Oakland held the lead until the bottom of the ninth inning, when the Broncos tied the game after an RBI double by Ryan McMillin.
Oakland threatened in the tenth, as Wilson led off with a double and made it as far as third base, but the Golden Grizzlies could not plate another run, and the Broncos took advantage of a late error to score the winning run on a single by Kelmigian.
Dan Augustine suffered the loss for OU after allowing one unearned run on one hit in 0.2 innings of work, falling to 1-1 on the season.
The Golden Grizzlies will return to action with a 3:05 p.m. game at Michigan on Wednesday, April 1.
