ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Melissa Jeltema led all players on the floor with 16 points and extended her double-digit scoring streak to 27 consecutive games and freshman Bethany Watterworth notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and a career-high four blocks as the Oakland University women's basketball team (3-9) flew past Rochester College (9-8) with a 73-25 decision Tuesday afternoon at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
"It feels nice to get a win on our home court," said head coach Beckie Francis. "I was really happy that we played pretty steady for the whole forty minutes. We played very unselfish basketball and I thought it was a solid effort by everyone that played."
The Golden Grizzlies began the game on a 22-4 scoring run and held the Warriors to just 10 first half points, carrying a 39-10 lead into halftime. Oakland would only continue to have full control of the game in the second half, outscoring Rochester College 34-15 in the second half en route to a 73-25 victory.
In addition to Jeltema and Watterworth, two other Golden Grizzlies scored in double figures: junior Anna Patritto with 12 points and sophomore Sharise Calhoun with 10.
The Warriors were led by Liz Stockwell with seven points and six rebounds.
Oakland out-rebounded Rochester College 43-33, with a 19-10 edge on the offensive glass, and committed fewer turnovers with 24 compared to RCs's 31. OU also registered a season-best eight blocks as a team and shot 45 percent from the floor for the contest.
The Golden Grizzlies will pick up Summit League play again on Saturday, Jan. 2 when they take on IUPUI for a 2:30 p.m. tip at the O'Rena. The game can be followed either through All Access or Gametracker at www.ougrizzlies.com.
