ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior Larry Wright scored a career-high 22 points and junior Keith Benson posted his eighth double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Oakland University (7-7) past Alma College (3-7), 106-57, on Monday night in men's basketball action inside the Athletics Center O'Rena.
"It was pretty much what we expected," said OU coach Greg Kampe. "It's the type of game we needed at this particular juncture in our schedule and I thought it went pretty much the way we thought it would go. It was great to see us shoot the ball the way we shot it. We stepped up and made shots and that's what they needed to do."
Sophomore Ilija Milutinovic scored a career high 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds to go with four blocks, while freshman Ledrick Eackles reached a career high with 11 points. Sophomore Blake Cushingberry added 11 points to round out double figure scorers for the Golden Grizzlies.
Cory Schneider scored 15 points and Greg Silverthorn tallied 12 points to lead the Scots.
OU began the game on a 33-4 run and shot a season-best 56.3 percent (36-64) from the floor. The Grizzlies drained a season-best 13 of 24 shots from three-point range (54 percent). The Golden Grizzlies also surpassed the 100-point plateau for the first time this season and the 106 points scored was the most against a non-conference foe since the 2002-03 season (Spring Arbor, 107).
The Scots had more turnovers (12) than field goals (7) in the first half. The Golden Grizzlies shot 70 percent (23-33) in the opening 20 minutes. Senior Johnathon Jones finished with eight points, eight assists and just two turnovers on a night where he broke the all-time school record with 114 starts.
Oakland will return to league action on Thursday night as the Grizzlies host Western Illinois (5-6, 0-2) at 1 p.m. The game will air on WXOU-FM (88.3) with Neal Ruhl on the call.
