ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomore goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt made seven saves for the Golden Grizzlies, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Buckeyes, as the Oakland University men's soccer team (5-4-2) fell 1-0 to No. 15 Ohio State University (6-3-2) Wednesday afternoon at the OU Soccer Field.
"Today, we faced a quality opponent," said head coach Eric Pogue. "They scored early and had us facing a deficit for the match. I thought our guys worked hard and created some chances, but we just weren't able to put it in the back of the net."
The Buckeyes got on the scoreboard early in the contest at 8:54 when Joshua Breto accepted a feed from Austin McAnena and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper's head to bring the game to a 1-0 lead in favor of Ohio State.
OU came close to tying the match up with close calls from sophomore Vuk Popovic in the 17th minute and junior Makesi Lewis in the 27th, but both were thwarted by the OSU goalkeeper, thus giving the Buckeyes the 1-0 advantage after the first 45 minutes.
The Golden Grizzlies battled to get on the scoreboard with three shots on goal in the second half, but none were able to connect with the back on the net, resulting in the match's final score of 1-0.
Oakland led the shots category, 14-10, though the Buckeyes fired more on goal, 8-5. The Golden Grizzlies also took more corner kicks with four compared to Ohio State's one.
"We need to rebound quickly and prepare for an important league game against IPFW Saturday afternoon," said Pogue.
The Golden Grizzlies will return to Summit League play on Saturday, Oct. 10 when they face IPFW in the second match of their four-game homestand. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and can be followed on Gametracker at www.ougrizzlies.com. -
