YPSILANTI, Mich. - Freshman Meghan Bray led all players with 19 kills, and senior Adrienne Leone added 17 kills with a .260 hitting percentage and 23 digs as the Oakland University volleyball team (12-3) captured a 3-1 victory over Eastern Michigan (3-17) on Tuesday at the Convocation Center.
"I'm really proud of our team's effort on the road and playing in a difficult arena," said Oakland University head coach Rob Beam. "We competed really well."
The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 2-0 lead after winning the opening set 25-16 and the second set 25-23. EMU rallied to capture a 25-19 win in the third set, but Oakland responded with a 25-15 win in the fourth set to seal the match victory.
"We talked between sets two and three about coming out with more energy and enthusiasm," added Beam. "It took us until the fourth set to respond and once we did we saw an outstanding offensive performance from all our hitters."
Joining Bray and Leone with double-digit kills was Jenna Lange with 11. Lange also hit .280. Sophomore Ashley Nevelle dished out 39 assists, while junior Brittany Dunn turned in a match-high 32 digs. Freshman Brittany Holbrook had six kills and four block assists, while the Golden Grizzlies as a team were 74-of-76 in serve-receive.
"Adrienne and Meghan carried a big offensive load for us and they terminated," said Beam. "It's great to have both outside hitters being so effective."
OU held a .201 to .093 advantage in hitting percentage, hitting a match-best .471 with 18 kills versus just two errors on 34 swings in the fourth and final set.
Oakland will return to action on Friday, Oct. 9, hosting Summit League foe IUPUI at the Athletics Center O'Rena. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
