Centenary Earns Scoreless Tie with Oakland

Oct. 16, 2009

Box Score

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomore Deanna Colarossi had eight shots, while Oakland University tallied 32 and 20 on goal, but the Golden Grizzlies (5-7-1, 2-2-1) could not find the back of the net despite all the pressure and tied Centenary College (8-3-1, 0-2-1), 0-0 double overtime, on Friday in Summit League women's soccer action at the OU Soccer Field.

"We dominated the game," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "We pushed the pace and were very aggressive on offense. We had some good chances to score. In the overtime periods, I felt we didn't have a good effort in the upper third."

The Golden Grizzlies have not allowed a goal to the Ladies for 470 consecutive minutes, dating back to 2005.

In the first half, Oakland controlled the pace putting up 12 shots to three for Centenary. The Ladies were not able to put up their first shot until 30 minutes into the contest.

Six and a-half minutes into the second half, senior Lindsey Blair raced into the box and looked to have a great scoring opportunity, but she was tripped and awarded a penalty kick. Blair sent a hard shot high, but Centenary's goalkeeper Kate Donnelly managed to deflect it over the top of the net to keep the game scoreless.

With 20 minutes remaining in the second half, freshman Leanne Fomenko drove past the defenders and fired up a shot, which Donnelly got a hand on it and deflected the ball to left side, Colarossi collected the rebound and her shot was blocked at the goal line by a Ladies defender.

The Golden Grizzlies continued to keep on the pressure, but were unable to crack Donnelly. In the first overtime, Oakland controlled the entire 10 minutes and had several chances. In the second overtime, Colorassi had another golden opportunity to win the game for Oakland with just a minute remaining, but did not manage to get off a hard shot just five-yards out and the rebound trickled just past the foot of Blair and ended up in Donnelly's chest who was on the turf.

Oakland had 32 shots, 10 corner kicks and 11 fouls while Centenary had four shots, one corner kick, 20 saves and 12 fouls. Donnelly finished the game with 19 saves.

The Golden Grizzlies remain at home, Sunday, Oct. 18 taking on Oral Roberts. The game, which is at the OU Soccer Field, is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
