AVON, Ohio - Sophomore Travis Peitz recorded career-best scores of 73 in rounds two and three to finish in a tie for 14th place to lead the Oakland University men's golf team to an eighth-place finish at the Cleveland State Invitational on Tuesday with an overall score of 903 (304-291-308) on the par-72, 7,215-yard Sand Ridge Golf Course. South Dakota State won the tournament with a three-round total score of 870 (+6).
"Round two was the lowest score we have shot since I have been here," said OU coach Brian Costello. "We played in some tough conditions out there with a one-hour rain delay to start. We just couldn't get anything going in the final round. The good thing is we are getting better."
Junior Frank McAuliffe carded a two-under par score of 70 in round two, and followed that up with a 77 today to finish in a tie for 28th place with a 10-over par score of 226. Sophomore Robby McNiff shot the second-best score this afternoon with a three-over par score of 75, finishing in a tie for 35th place with a total of 228 (+12).
Redshirt sophomore Michael Marks was the story in round one, carding seven birdies and an even-par 72, but dropped a 74 in round two before falling to an 83 today to finish in a tie for 39th place (229/+13), his best finish for the Golden Grizzlies. Sophomore Vince Carango improved nine shots in the second round with a 74, but finished with an 86 today to finish in a tie for 66th place (243).
The Golden Grizzlies will be in action again on Oct. 12-13, at the D.A. Weibring Invitational in Normal, Ill. (Illinois State).
