KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Senior Amy Golem notched 14 kills, junior Adrienne Leone added 11, and senior Lauren Duquette added a 16-dig effort as the Oakland University volleyball team (4-10, 1-2 Summit) snapped an eight-match skid with a 3-0 sweep over UMKC on Saturday at the Swinney Center.
"This was a great win for our team," said head coach Rob Beam. "It was nice to see that we could maintain a high level of energy and emotion, while executing very well." OU won the first two sets 25-19, 25-23 before hitting .423 in the final set en route to a bruising 25-13 win.
The performances of Golem and Leone keyed an OU offensive effort that saw the Golden Grizzlies hit .303 for the entire match. "Both of our outsides had tremendous matches," added Beam. "They did a great job of hitting with power and mixing shots."
The OU defense did not allow a single UMKC player to notch over six kills, and kept the UMKC offense to a .054 hitting percentage. "Our defense was also very stout," added Beam. "While (Duquette) anchored our effort, our entire team scrambled well."
Sophomores Katy Wilson and Samantha Filipek led the OU assist brigade, as Wilson dished out 17 and Filipek added 13.
The Golden Grizzlies will return to action on Friday, Oct. 3, facing North Dakota State. A 7 p.m. start time is scheduled. "It will be great to return to the O'Rena for three matches after a big road win."
