KALAMAZOO, Mich. ???C Rising junior Frank McAuliffe recovered from a tough start to fight back from a three-down deficit over the final three holes, with wins on 16 and 17 with pars to push Tom Werkmeister to the 18th hole, but McAuliffe???s bunker shot lipped the cup for birdie and he conceded to fall one down in the Round of 16 at the 97th Michigan Amateur Championship on the par-72, 6,766-yard Moors Golf Club on Friday.

McAuliffe, a native of Ann Arbor, fell three holes down through the first five holes, courtesy of a trio of misses from just three feet. He then rallied late on 16 and 17, but put his approach shot on 18 in the bunker that is in the middle of the green, separating nine and 18 greens. He needed to hole the shot to send the match in to extra holes and nearly accomplished that feat with a lip out.
