KALAMAZOO, Mich. ???C Junior Frank McAuliffe carded a pair of 2-and-1 match play victories this afternoon to advance to the round of 16 at the 97th Michigan Amateur Championship on the par-72, 6,766-yard Moors Golf Club on Thursday. McAuliffe, a native of Ann Arbor, qualified for the match play part of the event with scores of 75 and 78 to finish with a total of 153.
The top 64 advanced to match play. McAuliffe won his first match of the day 2-and-1 with an upset over David Vaclay. He then marched on to his second straight 2-and-1 victory, getting up by as many as three on the front side, over Tom Sullivan Jr., who upset No. 12 seed John Barry. McAuliffe will face fifth-seeded Tom Werkmeister tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.
Other Golden Grizzlies in action at the Michigan Amateur was redshirt freshman Sam LaMantia. LaMantia, a native of Trenton, Mich., carded scores of 86 and 80 in medal play to miss the cut.
