MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - Amy Golem turned in a team-high 10 kills, sophomores Katy Wilson and Samantha Filipek both dished out 15 assists, and senior Lauren Duquette added 26 digs, but it was not enough as the Oakland University volleyball team (6-19) dropped a 3-1 decision to Central Michigan on Tuesday night.
"Lauren Duquette was spectacular tonight," said head coach Rob Beam. "She was everywhere defensively and provided a huge competitive lift for our team. Our offense was not as sharp as it has been in recent matches. We needed to stress more areas of the court, particularly when we were out of system."
The Golden Grizzlies won the opening set 26-24, but fell 25-11, 25-22, and 25-17 in the final three sets. After hitting .275 in the opening set, OU fell to negative in the second set, hitting -.059, and hit .026 and .030 in sets three and four. Meanwhile, CMU hit .182 in the opening set and improved to .321 in the second set, hitting .140 and .268 in sets three and four.
"I was pleased that we won a two-point set against a high-level opponent. That is a good sign as we head into the final four matches of Summit League play."
Junior Adrienne Leone added seven kills, while Filipek rounded out her double-double with a 12-dig performance. Duquette was a perfect 26-of-26 on serve-receive, Brittany Dunn was 19-of-19, while Golem was 24-of-26. OU turned in nine team blocks, led by senior Leah Dupuie with six assisted blocks. Freshman Jenny Jones and Leone both turned in four assisted blocks.
The Golden Grizzlies will continue their three-match road swing this weekend as they travel to South Dakota State on Friday and North Dakota State on Saturday. Both matches are slated for a 7 p.m. start.
