ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Amy Golem turned in a 17-kill, 14-dig double-double, while junior Adrienne Leone led all players with 19 digs, and Katy Wilson turned in a 33-assist, 14-dig double-double as the Oakland University volleyball team (7-21, 4-11 Summit League) picked up a thrilling 3-2 win over Western Illinois on Friday at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
After OU won the opening two sets by identical 25-19 scores, WIU rallied to take 28-26 and 25-21 decisions in sets three and four before OU took a 16-14 win in the fifth set.
"I think having Brittany Dunn as our first server in the fifth set gave us the win," said head coach Rob Beam. "She's been outstanding over the second half of the season and having her serve first certainly made a difference."
Stephanie Parkin also reached double figures in kills for OU with 10, while Lauren Duquette led all Golden Grizzlies with 26 digs. OU held a .199 to .182 hitting advantage for the match.
The Golden Grizzlies will conclude their 2008 season with a home contest against IUPUI on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the O'Rena. Senior night festivities will be celebrated as part of the final match.
"This has been a very special group," said Beam. "They embraced me when I came in as head coach. They've done everything I've asked of them. It will be a lot of fun on senior night and it will be a lot of fun to celebrate five great careers."
