CEDAR CITY, Utah - Senior Jessica Boyle and sophomore Meghan Hartwig each scored one goal and had one assist and junior Lindsey Blair and freshman Shannon Doyle each netted goals for the Golden Grizzlies as the Oakland University women's soccer team was able to clinch a share of the conference title in style with a 4-0 shutout over Southern Utah University Friday night, concluding regular season play.
"The significant thing about tonight was that we were able to earn a share of the conference title," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "That was our goal from the beginning of the season and to be able to accomplish that with a shutout is great. Our attack is producing and we had a great performance all around."
Boyle got the Golden Grizzlies on the board early with a 22-yard blast to the corner at just 5:39 into the contest off an assist from Hartwig.
"Southern Utah closed in on Boyle so she had to shoot from the outside, but she does a great job of taking what her opponents give her," said O'Shea. "That's why we were able to get the first goal."
Oakland struck again at 15:09 when Blair played to the far post from a seven-yard angle off an assist form Boyle to make give the Golden Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.
Hartwig got in on the action again in the second half, this time scoring an unassisted goal at 53:14 off a laser from 12 yards out to make the score 3-0. It was her fourth goal in two games, after netting a hat trick against North Dakota State on Oct. 26.
OU had more goal up their sleeve at 72:21 when Doyle accepted a cross pass from freshman Jessica Lynch and fired it in from nine yards out to make the score 4-0, where it would stay for the remainder of the match.
Oakland also held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-1, and senior Kim Herbst made two saves on the night before freshman Shannon Coley took over goalkeeping duties for the last 12 minutes and made one save to preserve the shutout.
The Golden Grizzlies will next compete in the Summit League Tournament Nov. 7-9 in Macomb, Ill to try and capture their third tournament title in three years.
