ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Jessica Boyle scored the game's first goal in the 13th minute, and senior Lia Williamson netted her first of the season, the game winner in the 42nd minute off a corner kick, to lead the Oakland University women's soccer team (6-8-2, 5-1 Summit) to a 2-1 victory over South Dakota State University (12-4-0, 7-1 Summit) on Friday at the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies were the first team in league play to score on the Jackrabbits all season.
"We played very well and were able to shut down some of their dangerous players," said OU coach Nick O'Shea. "(Lauren) Brodie did a great job and D (Deanna Colarossi) on the outside, and then Lia (Williamson) and (Kristi) Smith in the back. So we shut down some of their dangerous players and got some good chances off of that."
Boyle had some tremendous chances throughout the game for the Golden Grizzlies. The midfielder from Lake Orion, Mich., tallied her sixth goal of the season on a shot from inside the box at 13:30 of the first half. The Jacks did respond just five minutes later as Kaitlin Justice dribbled the ball for 25 yards or so and blasted a shot past OU's Kim Herbst to tie the game at 1-1.
The Golden Grizzlies continued to pressure the Jacks and that paid off on a corner kick that Williamson took and curled it in to the net as it slipped through SDSU's Nicole Lograsso's fingers to give Oakland a 2-1 lead at the break.
OU did not sit on the lead as Boyle continued to be all over the field and had some brilliant chances in the 33rd minute. She took a pass from about 35-yards out and sent a shot over the goalkeeper's head that just trickled wide at the last second, and then had a little touch and go with freshman Shannon Doyle at the right-hand corner of the box as the shot glanced off the crossbar.
The Jackrabbits had a couple of late surges in the box, but the Grizzlies back line held strong and would not let the Jacks penetrate to get a chance at tying the game. Most of the play was held outside the box as OU handed SDSU its first loss in league play, and snapped the Jacks' 10-match winning streak. Herbst went on to make five saves for the Grizzlies.
OU had nine shots, five corner kicks and nine fouls, while SDSU had nine shots, three corner kicks and 11 fouls.
The Golden Grizzlies will host North Dakota State (5-10-2, 2-3-1) on Sunday for Senior Day at the OU Soccer Field. The game can be followed via live stats at www.ougrizzlies.com and will begin at 1 p.m.
