ROCHESTER, Mich. - The twin sister tandem of Meghan Hartwig and Melissa Hartwig each scored a goal as the Oakland University women's soccer team (5-8-2, 4-1 Summit) routed Western Illinois (5-7-2, 1-3 Summit), 4-0, on Friday at the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies scored four goals in the second half and improved to 9-0 versus the Westerwinds at home.
"We really had some nice runs in the front," said OU coach Nick O'Shea. "Meghan (Hartwig) and (Sarah) Lynch had a great give-and-go in the box for the first goal and Lindsey Blair was superb once again. The defense also was strong all day for us and limited their chances."
Sophomore Meghan Hartwig tallied the game-winner at the 53:41 minute mark on a nice touch-and-go with freshman Sarah Lynch as the Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead. OU would score a pair of goals within 10 minutes, first by freshman Amy Trandell as she received a nice feed from senior Jessica Boyle in the box and put it past the keeper (64:17). Senior Kristi Smith then drilled one from the top of the box that hit just under the crossbar and went in (74:17) as the Grizzlies went up by three, 3-0.
Sophomore Melissa Hartwig tallied her first goal of the season in the 85th minute on a feed from sophomore Carella DiMaggio as the Golden Grizzlies would cruise to a four-goal victory. Senior Kim Herbst registered her third shutout of the year, making two saves in the game.
Oakland will have a week off before taking on undefeated South Dakota State, 6-0 in league play, at the OU Soccer Field next Friday at 4 p.m. The game can be followed via live stats on www.ougrizzlies.com.
