FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Redshirt junior Wade Allan tallied his first goal of the season in the 74th minute, and senior Steve Clark recorded his league-leading seventh shutout with five saves, to lead the Oakland University men's soccer team (9-4, 3-1 Summit) to a 1-0 victory over IPFW (2-9-2, 0-3-1 Summit) on Friday night. The Golden Grizzlies outshot the Mastodons 9-4 in the second half, and 18-11 for the game.
"The first half was pretty even, but I felt like we took the game over in the second half," said OU coach Gary Parsons. "We had some good chances, but they made some good blocks and plays. We had some chances to put the game away, but they played us tough."
After a scoreless first half, Allan broke free at the 73:52 minute mark on a pass from junior Sebastian Harris as the Grizzlies took a -0 lead. Oakland had some opportunities to get the second goal, but were denied by IPFW goalkeeper Michael Knitter.
"For the amount of chances that we had, we needed to get two or three goals," said Parsons. "I thought we played well, and they played well too, so it was a good competitive game."
Clark made some quality saves for the Golden Grizzlies after OU went up by one to preserve the win. "They had some dangerous chances, and he made some good saves," said Parsons.
Oakland had 18 shots, four corner kicks and 18 fouls, while IPFW had 11 shots, five corner kicks and 15 fouls.
The Golden Grizzlies will continue in league play as they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., for a match-up with IUPUI next Saturday, Oct. 25. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. ET start.
