NORMAL, Ill. - Sophomore Robby McNiff fired a pair of one-over par scores of 71, and fellow sophomore Vince Carango carded an even-par score of 70 in round two, to lead the Oakland University men's golf team on Sunday at the D.A. Weibring Invitational on the Weibring Golf Course (Par 70, 6,681 yards). McNiff stands in a tie for 12th place heading in to the final round which will be played tomorrow.
The Golden Grizzlies opened with a score of 304 in round one, following that up with a season-best 289 (593). Top-ranked Illinois leads the tournament with an overall score of 555, three shots ahead of tourney host Illinois State.
Junior Frank McAuliffe and sophomore Travis Peitz were the other scorers for Oakland. McAuliffe fired a 73 in the second round, six shots better than his opening 79. Peitz fired a 77 and 75 on the opening day and is tied with McAuliffe in 57th place.
