Senior Kristi Tomczyk (Clinton Township, Mich.) led the Golden Grizzlies??? attack with two great scoring chances, while junior Kristi Evans (Mason, Mich.) set up an opportunity and had one from close range. USC opened the game on the attack, testing OU keeper Kim Herbst (Novi, Mich.) in just the 2nd minute with a shot from Ashli Sandoval, but Herbst turned the attempt aside to keep the game scoreless. The Women of Troy earned a corner kick on the play and set up a scoring chance for Lauren Brown, but her shot sailed over the crossbar. Sandoval gave USC a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute with her first goal of the season as her shot found its way into the net off the keeper???s hands. The Golden Grizzlies created a prime scoring chance for Tomczyk in the 30th minute, sending a long pass from the midfield to spring her on a break up the left side. Tomczyk fired a shot from about 15 feet out, forcing USC keeper Kristin Olsen to make a diving save. Six minutes later Evans sent a long cross from the midfield to spring Tomczyk on another break, but once again Olsen denied the senior forward, preserving the 1-0 lead. The Women of Troy gained possession of the ball and moved into the attacking zone, setting up a scoring opportunity for Amy Rodriguez, but Herbst made the save. In the 43rd minute Kasey Johnson created a scoring chance, but her shot was wide of the net and USC held the 1-0 advantage at intermission. In the second half the Golden Grizzlies turned up the physical play and as a result controlled possession more than they had in the first half. Evans had a quality scoring chance in the 58th minute, receiving a pass inside the box and turning to fire from about five feet out, but Olsen again made the diving save. Rodriguez extended the USC lead to 2-0, taking a pass from Stacey Strong and aiming into the lower left corner for her second goal of the year. Alyssa Davila had a chance to give USC a three-goal edge, but freshman keeper Elizabeth Watza (Northville, Mich.) was up to the task, batting Davila???s attempt aside to keep the Golden Grizzlies within two. Davila had another quality scoring chance in the 84th minute, firing from about 10 feet out low on the left side, but Watza made a great save, batting the ball high into the air and catching it to prevent a rebound. Rodriguez had a shot blocked in the 86th minute and fired one wide in the 88th minute, as USC went on for the 2-0 victory. Herbst and Watza each made four saves while giving up one goal apiece in 45 minutes of play. Olsen made three saves to earn the win.
