Box Score Rochester, Mich. (Apr. 20, 2007) ???C Oakland???s bats came up with some key hits today as the Golden Grizzlies scored all of their runs via two-out hits in a 5-3 Mid-Continent Conference softball victory over visiting Centenary. The biggest of them all was freshman
Katie Dreyer???s (Metamora, Mich.) two-run single in the fifth that broke a tie game and sent OU to the win. It was Centenary (19-22, 4-3 Mid-Con) that put runs up on the board first, getting a pair of the unearned variety across in the first. With two away Allison Shepperd reached on an error before Micah Rhodes hit a sinking liner to left that fell just out of the reach of a diving
Cheron Guyton (Detroit, Mich.). The ball rolled all the way to the fence and Rhodes made it around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. Oakland (10-22, 4-3 Mid-Con) answered in the bottom of the second with a pair to tie things up. Guyton singled with one down, remaining on first after a fly-out.
Angela Righetti (East Tawas, Mich.) then put one over the right fielder???s head for her first triple of the year to put the first Oakland run on the board. When the throw from the outfield came into third, the ball got away and Righetti was able to come home with the tying run. Centenary retook the lead in the fourth with an unearned run that scored on a double-steal play. Oakland got it back in its half of the inning, getting an
Alex Perrino (Clarkston, Mich.) single, a sacrifice, and an RBI single off the bat of
Tosha Hodgkinson (North Branch, Mich.). Oakland then took the lead for good with a two-spot in the fifth.
Samantha Rhein (Leonard, Mich.) led off as a pinch-hitter and reached on an error.
Audrey Sabourin (White Lake, Mich.), who Rhein hit for, came back on to run and moved up to second on a sacrifice and then to third on a wild pitch.
Sarah Clark (The Dalles, Ore.) then drew a two-out walk and stole second to set the stage for Dreyer???s hit. She lined a 1-1 pitch to left, OU???s only hit of the inning, to score both runners and put the Golden Grizzlies on top for the first time in the game. After Centenary scored in the fourth, Oakland starter
Jessica Granger (Troy, Mich.) shut the Ladies down the rest of the way, allowing just three hits over the last three innings. Centenary threatened in the sixth when Brittany Williams doubled to left with a runner on first, but the Golden Grizzly defense came up with a big play as Guyton fired the ball in to
Julie Owen (Goodrich, Mich.) whose relay home to Righetti nailed the runner, preserving the then tie game. Granger then finished things off with a 1-2-3 seventh for her ninth win of the season. Oakland and Centenary will complete the series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at Noon at the OU Softball Field.
