The Golden Grizzlies advanced to Round 2 of the NCAA Tournament and finished 12-7-3. ROCHESTER, Mich. ???C Oakland University???s Steve Clark, Ian Daniel, Piotr Nowak and Martin Sandell were all tabbed Midwest All-Region third team, announced by National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association on Thursday. The Golden Grizzlies advanced in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since becoming Div. I (1999), and won both the regular season and tournament Summit League championships.
Clark, a junior from Mason, Mich., led the league with six shutouts and finished second with a 1.03 goals against average. A first team All-Summit League honoree, Clark only allowed one goal during league play this season.
Daniel, a junior from Troy, Mich., was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Year after helping the Golden Grizzlies to five shutouts during league action. He tallied two goals and one assist from the back and was tabbed first team all-league.
Nowak, a junior from Shelby Township, Mich., also garnered first team all-league honors for the Grizzlies. He led the league with nine assists and finished second with 19 points.
Sandell, a junior from Oslo, Norway, was named Summit League Newcomer of the Year after tallying 13 points, with five goals and three assists. He finished in a tie for seventh place in the league in points and ninth in goals.
The Golden Grizzlies advanced to their third NCAA Tournament this season after capturing the Summit League Tournament crown with a 2-0 victory over IUPUI. Oakland won its first ever NCAA postseason contest against Michigan State, 2-1, in East Lansing to advance to Notre Dame, Ind. The Grizzlies nearly pulled off the upset of the Irish, falling 2-1. OU finished the season 7-0-1 versus Summit League opponents.
