Stew Givens earned defensive player of the week, while Piotr Nowak garnered offensive player of the week honors. ROCHESTER, Mich. ???C Oakland University???s Stew Givens was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, and teammate Piotr Nowak was named Offensive Player of the Week, after leading the men???s soccer team to its sixth regular season title in nine seasons, announced by the league office on Monday.
Givens, a sophomore defender from Troy, Mich., was instrumental in shutting down the IUPUI Jaguars attack, limiting them to a season-low two shots in the game. He also created offensive attacks for the Grizzlies from the back that pushed forward and kept IUPUI pinned in its end for most of the game. Against the Badgers, Givens helped OU keep Wisconsin off the scoreboard for 50:06 minutes while the Grizzlies built a 3-1 lead.
Nowak assisted on the game-winning goal on a nice thru ball to the far post that was put in against Wisconsin. He also scored the game???s first goal for Oakland on a 20-yard blast to lead the Grizzlies to a 3-2 win over the Badgers in Madison. Nowak, a junior midfielder from Shelby Township, Mich., tallied a goal and an assist against IUPUI in a showdown for first place as OU cruised to a 4-0 victory. He finished the week with two goals and two assists for the Grizzlies.
The Golden Grizzlies will take on No. 16 Akron tomorrow at the OU Soccer Field. Senior Day will begin at 4 p.m.
