HUNTLEY, Ill. ???C Junior Nikki Swan fired a final round 76 and sophomore Austin McDermaid carded a 77 to lead the Oakland University women???s golf team to a second-place finish at the Huskie Classic on the par-72, 5,896-yard Whisper Creek golf course on Tuesday afternoon. Swan, a native of Tipp City, Ohio, was the top individual finisher, firing a two-day total of 150 (74-76), winning by four shots.
McDermaid, a native of Grand Blanc, Mich., improved her opening round of 81 by four shots to crack the top 10, finishing in ninth place with a two-day score of 158. Her final round 77 was only bettered by teammate Swan and Western Illinois??? Jennifer Holt, each shooting 76.
Also breaking in to the top 10 for the Golden Grizzlies was Jennifer Goulet. Goulet, a senior from Forest, Ontario, fired a final round score of 82 for a total score of 157 (75-82), to finish in eighth place individually.
Oakland shot a two-day total of 629 (307-316), six shots behind host and champion Northern Illinois??? score of 623 (307-316). Loyola shot the day???s best score of 314 (632) to finish in third place, Detroit-Mercy finished fourth with a score of 653 (325-328), WIU fifth with a tally of 658 (328-330) and Wisconsin-Green Bay sixth with a total of 770 (384-386).
The Golden Grizzlies will return to the links next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7-8, at Western Golf and Country Club in Redford, Mich.
