(Sept. 9, 2006) ???C On the final day of the Courtyard by Marriott Oakland Invitational volleyball tournament Oakland could not find a win, as it dropped a pair of matches in three games to Cleveland State and Bowling Green. The Vikings won by scores 30-22, 30-18 and 30-17 while the Falcons took the games by scores of 30-8, 30-16, 30-19. Sophomore
Stephanie Parkin (Clarkston, Mich.) was named to the all-tournament team after leading OU in kills in both contests, totaling 19 for the day. Against Cleveland State the Golden Grizzlies had the lead in the first game at 16-13 after a block from
Monica Frechen (Fowler, Mich.) and
Amanda Morely (Holland, Mich.). The game remained close, with the two sides tied as late as 20-20. The Vikings then won five of the next six points to take control of the game, ending it with a pair of aces from Mel Snyder. Cleveland State took control of game two early, taking a 14-6 advantage that Oakland could not overcome. The Vikings again had the upper had early in the third game, taking a 17-9 lead on a kill from Alexis Korovich. The Golden Grizzlies could not put together a string of points the rest of the way as CSU took the win. In the match with Bowling Green, the Falcons offense was clicking on all cylinders, hitting at a .500 pace. In game one BGSU did not have an attack error, riding a 10-point surge that put them up 21-6 as they easily won the game. Game two was much the same, as the Falcons jumped out to a 17-9 after a Meghan Mohr kill. Oakland finally put together a string of points late in the game on the strength of a block and a kill from Frechen, but it was not enough as the Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the match. Bowling Green rode the strength of its offense to another early lead in the third game, taking a 14-6 advantage on a Stephanie Swiger kill. A Parkin kill started a streak that saw OU score six of seven points late in the game, but Bowling Green was able to halt the run and go on to take the match. Cleveland State also defeated Indiana State today to win the tournament with a perfect 3-0 mark. Bowling Green also took down the Sycamores to place second with a 2-1 mark. Indiana State was third at 1-2, with Oakland finishing fourth. Cleveland State???s Alexis Korovich was named the tournament MVP, with fellow Vikings Beth Greulich and Liz Fazio also earning all-tournament honors. Rounding out the all-tournament team were Chrissy Goethke and Corey Domek of Bowling Green, Kelli Whitaker of Indiana State and Oakland???s
Stephanie Parkin. Oakland???s next action will be on Tuesday when the Golden Grizzlies travel to Michigan State to take on the Spartans at 7:00 p.m.
