Evans??? Penalty Kick Gives Oakland 3-2 OT Victory

Box Score Kalamazoo, Mich. (Sept. 15, 2006) ???C Sophomore Kristi Evans??? (Mason, Mich.) successful penalty kick in the 97th minute and a two-goal performance by junior Kristi Tomczyk (Clinton Township, Mich.) propelled Oakland to a 3-2 OT victory over host Western Michigan at the WMU Soccer Complex this afternoon. With the win Oakland improves to 2-5 overall, while the Broncos fell to 1-5-1. Tomczyk gave the Golden Grizzlies an early 1-0 lead, splitting the defense and shooting from 10 yards out to notch her first goal of the season. Sophomores Chelsea Atiyeh (Novi, Mich.) and Jessica Boyle (Lake Orion, Mich.) helped set up the play. WMU outshot Oakland 11-6 in the first half, but the Golden Grizzlies held the 1-0 lead at intermission. Western Michigan???s Laura White evened the game 1-1 with an unassisted goal in the 59th minute. Tomczyk answered in the 66th minute, aiming a shot into the upper right corner of the net to regain the one-goal lead 2-1. Senior Marianne Samdal (Tiller, Norway) garnered an assist on Tomczyk???s second goal of the match. Nine minutes later Thalia Playford placed a shot just under the crossbar for the Broncos, tying the score 2-2. The Golden Grizzlies pressured late in the half with Evans and freshman Marlie Lieberman (West Bloomfield, Mich.) launching shots in the waning minutes, but they were unable to convert and regulation ended with the teams deadlocked at 2-2. Evans??? successful penalty shot in the 97th minute was the only shot for either team in extra frame. Sophomore goalkeeper Kim Herbst (Novi, Mich.) turned aside nine shots to earn the win for Oakland, while Sarah Phillips made five saves for Western Michigan. The Broncos had a slight edge in shots 22-20. The Golden Grizzlies returns home to face Loyola Marymount Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Oakland Soccer Field.
