(Sept. 30, 2005) ???C Oakland University???s women???s soccer team got back in the win column Friday evening as the Golden Grizzlies claimed a 2-1 victory over Colorado College in the Stanford Nike Invitational. Senior Kristi Swaving (Albuquerque, N.M.) gave OU its first goal of the match at 56:36 and the game-winner came on an own goal. ???We played well and both teams had a couple chances in the first half,??? head coach Nick O???Shea said. ???We picked up the pace in the second half and kept the pressure up, which finally paid off.??? After a scoreless first period, Oakland lit up the scoreboard just over 11 and a half minutes into the second when the Black and Gold earned a corner kick. Defender Kristi Mitchell (Troy, Mich.) took the kick and Swaving was able to get to it first, heading the ball into the net. With the team???s added pressure, the Golden Grizzlies were able to force a very costly Tiger error. In the 68th minute a Colorado College defender reached to try and deflect a cross to an OU forward, but instead headed the ball into her own net to give Oakland a 2-0 advantage at the 67:52 mark. With a two-goal deficit, the Tigers pushed three strikers up front to put themselves in a better position to score. In the 78th minute Colorado College earned a free kick and scored on it as Katlin Okamoto sent the ball over a Golden Grizzly wall and into the net. However, that???s as close as the Tigers could get to catching up as Oakland held on for the 2-1 win. ???Our defense stepped up and did an excellent job tonight,??? O???Shea commented. ???We limited their quality scoring chances and, except for one mistake in the first half, played very well.??? OU keeper Jessica Howard (West Bloomfield, Mich.) tallied five saves in the win, while Colorado College goaltender Geneva Sills had two. Forward Chelsea Atiyeh (Novi, Mich.) had the Golden Grizzlies??? other two shots on goal coming off the bench. Oakland improves to 4-4-1 for the season and will face #5 Santa Clara on Sunday at 2 p.m. (11 a.m. Pacific) in the team???s final match of the Stanford Nike Invitational.
