Danielle Nutter (Bay City, Mich.) swatted a two-run shot in game two for the Golden Girzzlies.
Laura Chomokos (Gilbert, Ariz.) picked up the win in the second game, striking out nine in her complete game performance. Oakland (4-18) struck first in its first at-bat of the afternoon, getting a two-out double by
Came Knorr (Appleton, Wis.) and then an RBI single from Chomokos to put OU in the lead. IPFW countered in its half of the inning when Tierni Green led off with a double and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch and a ground out. IPFW then broke open the game with five runs, all of which were unearned, in the fourth. With one gone
Jenna Beachy reached first when OU right fielder
Missy Pitera (Shelby Township, Mich.) could not come up with the catch on a ball that was slicing away from her. Angela Pasquali was then safe on another error and that opened the flood gates for the Mastodons. They then got a run scoring single from Ty Lambert that was followed by a two-run single by Kacie Stone that made it 4-1. IPFW then tacked on two more runs on a single and a wild pitch before
Jessica Brubaker (Waterford, Mich.) come out of the bullpen to douse the fire by getting a pop-up to end the inning. Oakland got one back in the fifth on Jones first home run of the season, but could only manage two more hits after that off of IPFW starter Beth Harmon, who went all the way to pick up the win. In the second game it was once again Oakland that got on the board first, breaking a scoreless tie with a three-spot in the third.
Alex Perrino (Clarkston, Mich.) led off with a single before Nutter followed with her blast to center to put the Golden Grizzlies in the lead.
Natalie Webb (Glenwood, Ill.) then singled and eventually came around on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning for OU. IPFW got one back in the bottom of the inning on a Natalie Clark RBI single, but Oakland came back with two more in the fifth that proved to be the game winners. Webb led off with a double and with two out moved to third on a single by Jones. Webb then scored when
Lisa Colores (Gilbert, Ariz.) was safe at first on an error on the IPFW shortstop.
Shelley Cybulski (Warren, Mich.), who had pinch run for Jones, then scored on a single up the middle by
Stephanie Zellner (Geravis, Ore.). The Mastodons got single runs back in the fifth and the seventh, but Chomokos got the outs when she needed them, ending the game with IPFW threatening with a runner on and one run in by striking out the final hitter of the afternoon. She allowed just one walk to go with her nine strikeouts as she improved her record to 2-8 for the season. Knorr, Webb and Chomokos all had a pair of hits on the day to lead the OU hitting attack, with Webb scoring a pair of runs and Chomokos driving in one. Oakland returns to conference play on Friday when it takes on IUPUI in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. in Indianapolis.
