Warriors Get Best of Golden Grizzlies

Box Score 1 Box Score 2 Rochester, Mich. (April 7, 2004) ???C Oakland University???s softball team dropped its eleventh game straight on Wednesday afternoon at the OU Softball Field in doubleheader action against intra-state rival Wayne State. The Warriors took the Golden Grizzlies in two straight handing the team losses by scores of 6-1 and 1-0. Highlighting the first game for Oakland was freshman catcher Danielle Shamus (Commerce, Mich.) who rocked two doubles throughout the game. Oakland???s record now stands at 9-20 on the season. Oakland had many chances within the first four innings of game one as the Golden Grizzlies loaded the bases each inning but could only manage to bring in one run as twelve runners were left on base. Wayne State would capitalize on some errors and opened the scoring in the third when Sue Verbeem reached second on an error by Oakland???s left fielder and was brought home by Maria D???Agostino. Leah Ondrovick followed Verbeem???s opening and hit a double to left field to advance D???Agostino to third and put herself in a scoring position. Both runners were then brought home when Jordan Sinclair stepped up to the plate and popped a ball up to second base to put the score at 3-0. The Warriors would then double the score in the top of the fourth to bring the lead to six and Oakland would respond in the bottom of the inning with one run to end the inning at 6-1. Freshman catcher Shamus was the lead hitter for the Black and Gold and hit her first double of her career. She was brought home by left fielder Christina Schulte (Rochester, Mich.) who flied out to left field to put the Golden Grizzlies on the board. Oakland began the second game with Schulte coming up with a big hit to center field for her first triple of the season. However, it wasn???t until the fourth inning that either team could get on the board. Wayne State began the fourth with Ondrovick getting hit by left-handed pitcher Nicole Marzano (McHenry, Ill.) to get on base. Ondrovick was replaced by pinch runner Anna Schneider who was eventually brought home by Sarah Kish???s single to the right center of the field. That was the only run of the game as Wayne State took its second win by a score of 1-0. Oakland will continue its conference games this weekend in Valparaiso, Indiana where the team takes on the Crusaders on Friday and Saturday. Friday's games are slated for 2:30 p.m. EST while Saturday's games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EST.
