Chris Sullivan (Rockford, Mich.) and
Hunor Ma???te??? (Hungary) have been invited to the 2004 NCAA Division I Men???s Swimming Championships the NCAA announced Friday. The championships will be held in Long Island, N.Y. from March 25th-27th ???C one week after the women???s championships which are held in College Station, Texas. Both Sullivan and Ma???te??? will be representing Oakland at the championships in a combined four different events. Sullivan will be making the trip for the third consecutive year after having been invited both as a freshman and a sophomore. He will be swimming three events ???C the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly. Sullivan made the qualifying times in each of these events after swimming times of 19.88, 43.81 and 47.90 in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly respectively. Each of his times rank in the top 25 in the country with his time in the 50 free (19.88) being the fastest at 20th in the nation. Ma???te???, one of only a select number of freshmen, will be going to the championships for the first time. After having a successful year in the pool for the Golden Grizzlies in dual meet and championship competition, Ma???te??? will look to continue this success in the pool as an individual at the championships. Ma???te??? has been invited to the meet in the 100 breaststroke in which he recorded a season best time of 54.55. Out of a pool of 39 who was invited to the meet in this event, Ma???te???s time ranks 26th. Head coach
Pete Hovland is eager for the meet and anticipates that both swimmers will excel in their respective events. ???We???re really excited??? commented Hovland. ???To have representatives going to the meet for the third year in a row on the men???s side is really outstanding. We are sure to be well represented by both Chris and Hunor.???
