Edwards??? Goal Leads Oakland Past UMKC, 1-0

Box Score Rochester, Mich. (Oct. 23, 2004) ???C Oakland???s men???s soccer team took another step towards clinching a berth in the Mid-Con tournament this afternoon as the Golden Grizzlies earned a hard fought 1-0 win over UMKC. Chris Edwards (Glasgow, Scotland) recorded his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 68th minute to provide the margin of victory for OU. Oakland improved to 9-3-2 and 3-1-1 in the Mid-Con with the win, with UMKC falling to 2-9-0 and 1-3-0 with the loss. UMKCs Brian Garcia got off a shot in the first minute of the contest, but Jeff Wiese (Omaha, Neb.) made the first of his three saves on the afternoon to thwart the chance. Both teams had opportunities in the first half, but neither could finish their chances, with Wiese and his UMKC counterpart, Todd Dohlman each making three saves to keep the game scoreless in the first 45 minutes of play. Play turned more physical in the second half, with a total of four yellow cards issued in the final 45 minutes of action. Each team got off shots in the first five minutes, but both went wide to keep the game scoreless. A little over 20 minutes in Oakland made a run down the right side of the field and Danny Ng (Randolph, Mass.) got possession in the right corner where he managed to get off a cross into the box. The ball deflected off a UMKC defender to Shahar Ktovim (Holon, Israel) who got just enough of it to push it over to Edwards in front of the goal. Edwards, the number three goal scorer in the Mid-Con, put his shot away to put OU on the board. Oakland, energized by the goal, got off five more shots in the next 10 minutes to just one for the Kangaroos. Alex McDonald (Swansea, Ill.) had the best opportunity to ice the game for the Golden Grizzlies, but his shot deflected off the post and went wide with a little more than 10 minutes left. Garcia had the final chance for UMKC in the final minute, but third shot of the day went wide and OU went on to take the win. Wiese???s shutout was his sixth of the season and it was the ninth overall for OU. Oakland, which had 13 second half shots, out shot UMKC, 17-8, and had seven corner kicks to four for the Kangaroos. Dohlman made seven stops in goal for UMKC, with Garcia leading the team with his three shots. Oakland will play its final home match in its next action when it hosts Wright State in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m.
