Shelley Piccirillo (Niagara Falls, Ont.) got both goals for the Golden Grizzlies whose record now falls to 2-3-1. The team played the host Loyola Marymount on Friday and dropped a 1-0 decision. The Bruins offense proved to be too much for the Golden Grizzlies and managed to score three goals on three different set plays and one goal on a penalty kick. The Bruins jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the first 19 minutes of play. Bruin junior Kendal Billingsley got things started for UCLA, scoring in the ninth minute on an assist from Stacy Lindstrom. Six minutes later, Lindsay Greco put the Bruins up 2-0 on an unassisted goal at the 14:53 mark. The Bruins would get another goal just moments later when freshman Bristyn Davis put in her second goal of the year in the 19th minute of play, putting UCLA ahead 3-0. Whitney Jones was credited with the assist on Davis' goal. Following the Bruins' third goal, Oakland got on the board just five seconds later when Piccirillo scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 3-1. The Bruins would go into halftime with a 4-2 advantage, as Jones scored in the 37th minute and Oakland's Piccirillo put in her second goal of the match off an assist from freshman
Lisa-Marie Woods (Oslo, Norway)at the 42:51 mark. In the second half, Bruin senior Sarah-Gayle Swanson tallied her second goal of the year and junior Kim Devine scored on a penalty kick, giving UCLA the 6-2 victory.
Sarah Buckland (Burlington, Ont.) was in net for the Golden Grizzlies and made six saves on the day. UCLA outshot Oakland by a 27-3 margin and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Head coach Nick O???Shea was pleased with his team???s efforts after playing such a high nationally ranked team. ???It was a good game??? said O???Shea after the match. ???We gained lots of experience today. Our players stepped it up and played very well against a good team.??? Oakland returns to action this week where they travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. to take on Eastern Michigan at 4:00 p.m. Friday.
