Oakland Women??' Soccer Falls 1-0 At Loyola Marymount

Los Angeles, Calif. - Oakland???s women???s soccer team came up short on offense here tonight as the Golden Grizzles dropped a 1-0 decision to host Loyola Marymount in OU???s first game at the LMU Tournament. It was the second straight shutout loss for Oakland, which fell to 2-2-1 this season. The Lions improved to 2-1-2 with the win. It was LMU that came out with the offensive pressure in the first half, controlling the ball and outshooting Oakland by an 11-1 margin. The Lions had the best scoring chance in the half when Jessica Hanson picked up a loose ball in front of the Oakland goal and fired off a shot at the Golden Grizzly goal. The shot beat OU goalkeeper Sarah Buckland (Burlington, Ont.), but an OU defender cleared the shot away before it could cross the goal line. After finishing the half tied at 0-0, Loyola Marymount again applied pressure in the second half, and this time the Lions were rewarded. In the 66th minute LMU goalkeeper Kelly Yukihiro played a ball ahead to Tana Smothermon at midfield. Smothermon then found Kellie Schroeder open down the right side and fed her the ball. Schroeder got off a shot from 15 yards out that just cleared Buckland???s reach and struck home in the upper left corner of the goal. It was more of the same in the second stanza as the Lions rattled off another five shots to just one for Oakland. Buckland was kept busy by LMU's offensive attack. Buckland made five saves in the game but came just short on Schroeder's game-winning shot. That proved to be all the Lions would need as they outshot Oakland 16-2 during the game. Buckland had a busy night, making five saves to keep the Golden Grizzlies in the game. In earlier action, No.3 UCLA shutout Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 4-0, in the first game of the LMU Tournament. All four teams return to action on Sunday, Sept. 14. UCLA will take on Oakland at 11 a.m. Pacific (2 p.m. Eastern) with LMU and Wisconsin-Milwaukee following at approximately 1:30 p.m.
