Box Score Champaign, Ill. ???C Oakland???s women???s soccer team played 110 minutes of soccer on Sunday against Southeast Missouri State where neither team were able to score and the game had to end in a draw. The game, played in Champaign, Illinois, was the championship game of the Illini Cup. The Golden Grizzlies defeated the Fighting Illini 1-0 on Friday and were looking to be the sole victors of the cup on Sunday. However, after ninety minutes of regulation play, both teams were unable to score and two periods of overtime were played. Oakland managed to fire 17 shots on the Otahkian goalkeeper, Amanda Wrzos, but was unable to put the ball in the back of the net. Sophomore Kristi Swaving (Albuquerque, New Mexico) led the offense with six shots while freshman Lisa-Marie Woods (Oslo, Norway) was close behind with five. Goalkeeper Sarah Buckland (Burlington, Ont.) was kept busy in the net making seven saves and facing 14 shots. Southeast Missouri State edged out Oakland 3-1 on corner kicks and also made 20 fouls compared to Oakland???s 18. Head coach Nick O'Shea was pleased with his team's performance over the weekend. "We're happy to come away with a win and a tie" stated O'Shea after Sunday's game. "We had two tough games and ended with a great start to our season. We learned a lot about ourselves over the weekend and have a lot of positives to begin the year." Oakland continues their 2003 season next Friday where the team plays intrastate rival Michigan in Michigan???s Tournament in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines went 2-0 against the Golden Grizzlies last year and put Oakland out of the NCAA Tournament title hunt after winning the first round game 1-0.
