2003 Season One of the Best for Oakland Soccer

Rochester, Mich. (Nov. 26, 2003) - Oakland University's women's soccer team enjoyed a successful season in 2003. The team broke two school records, won its fourth consecutive Mid-Con Championship Title, took the conference regular season crown, made its third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Women's College Cup, and ended the season with one of the best winning records throughout the program's history at 15-5-1. The Golden Grizzlies' season can be called nothing less than successful as the team enjoyed three victories over Big Ten opponents - including the program's first victory over intra-state rival Michigan and Indiana. On it's way to claiming the conference championship, Oakland managed to set a new record for the most consecutive wins in a season as well as the longest streak of games without a loss winning ten games. Furthermore, the team remained undefeated on home turf in 2003 winning all six home games. Oakland also swept the Mid-Con honors - taking Offensive Player of the Year (Shelly Piccirillo), Defensive Player of the Year (Therese Bjorke), Newcomer of the Year (Lisa-Marie Woods), and Coach of the Year (Nick O'Shea) accolades. The team also placed ten players on the first and second All-Mid-Con teams. The Golden Grizzlies took a step further in 2003 in becoming one of the country's top programs. And with more successes to follow in 2004, Oakland will solidify that title and proceed further in its quest for a national championship title.
