The first 25 minutes saw the teams battle back-and-forth as neither team managed a goal. OU's Debbie Cartmel (Merseyside, England/De La Salle) got Oakland on the board as she scored off a deflection at the 26:04 minute mark. The Golden Grizzlies continued to pressure the Thunderbirds and freshman Elizabeth Turner (Troy/Detroit Country Day) netted her first goal of the season 1:52 later for a 2-0 OU lead. Senior Ashley McGhee (Burlington, Ontario/Lester B. Pearson) scored the final two goals of the half for Oakland at the 31:30 and 35:01 minute marks for a 4-0 halftime lead. The Golden Grizzlies didn't let up as sophomore Shelly Piccirillo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/North Myer) scored the first goal of the second half on a direct kick from freshman Kelly Rieck (Shelby Twp./Eisenhower/Michigan State) and Cartmel. Senior Anita Rapp (Lillehammer, Norway/Lillehammer) scored the sixth goal of the game for OU on a left-footed blast from 35-yards out at the 79:20 minute mark. Cartmel scored her second goal of the game four minutes later off some nifty passing from sophomore Beth Howson (Gross Pointe/Grosse Pointe South) and Rapp for a 7-0 lead. The final OU goal came off the head of Jenny Young (Davison/Flint Kearsley) from freshman Lindsey Mathus (Monroe/Jefferson) 88:42 into the game. OU's McGhee led all scorers with two goals and one assist. Rapp chipped in with a goal and two assists. Oakland had 31 shots, 12 cornerkicks, four saves, nine fouls and three offsides. Southern Utah had eight shots, seven saves, 11 fouls and six offsides. "It was good to see our forwards get on track as far as creating scoring opportunities and finishing chances," said O'Shea. "It was a good game to get everybody playing time and gave us the start we wanted in conference play." Oakland remains inside the Mid-Continent Conference as they host IUPUI in Rochester. The Golden Grizzlies and Jaguars will begin play at 12:30 on the OU Soccer Field. Box Score
