Oakland Downs Wisconsin-Milwaukee To Win Verizon Wireless Soccer Tournament

The Oakland University women's soccer team ran away with the Verizon Wireless tournament with a big 5-1 victory over host Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sunday in Milwaukee. The Golden Grizzlies used a four-goal second half to solidify the win and begin the 2001 season 2-0. Wisconsin-Milwaukee falls to 0-2. The first half saw a lot of quality chances for the Golden Grizzlies but OU's Anita Rapp (Lillehammer, Norway/Lillehammer) was the only one to beat UWM's netminder. The senior midfielder scored on a 30-yard direct kick to give Oakland a 1-0 lead at the half. The next 45 minutes was a different story as Oakland poured on four goals for the 5-1 victory. OU's McGhee began the scoing with a goal from Debbie Cartmel (Merseyside, England/De La Salle) and Erica Demers (Welland, Ontario/Centennial) at 48:12. Freshman Jenny Young (Davison/Flint Kearsley) scored the games third goal (65:46) on some crafty passing from Rapp and McGhee to make the score 3-0. McGhee netted her second goal of the game at the 78:03 minute mark as Natalie Simas (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection C.S.S.) served a pass in the box to open up a four-goal lead. The final OU goal came from Rapp as Demers started the play with a cross to put the Golden Grizzlies up 5-0. UWM's Alexa Torres scored the final goal of the game with one minute left in the game. "The team looked really good and worked together to create a lot of quality scoring chances," said O'Shea. "They showed a lot of discipline on defense where we limited their chances." Rapp earned the tournament's most valuable offensive player with three goals and an assist. Sophomore Sarah Buckland (Burlington, Ontario/Lester B. Pearson) earned most valuable defensive player by only allowing one goal and making 10 saves. McGhee was selected to the all-tournament team by scoring two goals and recording an assist, while Demers was the final OU player on the all-tourney team with three assists. "Winning the tournament is a great way to begin our season," said O'Shea. "Although it is a great start, we know it's a long season and we have to play one game at a time." Oakland welcomes Big Ten foe Wisconsin to Rochester Friday, September 7. The two teams will battle on the OU Soccer Field at 4 p.m. Box Score
