O'Shea Wins 100th As Oakland Tops Michigan State

The Oakland University women's soccer coach Nick O'Shea picked up his 100th victory at Oakland with a 2-1 win over Michigan State on the OU Soccer Field Thursday afternoon. The Golden Grizzlies took advantage of the wind at its back in the first 45 minutes as they scored two goals for the victory. Oakland tied a school record with eight consecutive wins with this victory over MSU. OU improves to 13-2-0, while MSU falls to 6-6-2. The Golden Grizzlies took the wind in the first half and it paid off with two big goals. The first goal was scored by sophomore forward Shelly Piccirillo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/North Myer) at the 14:37 minute mark as she took advantage of a give away by MSU in the box and blasted it home to put OU up 1-0. Oakland was happy to see #10 Anita Rapp (Lillehammer, Norway/Lillehammer) back in the line-up as she was fed by freshman midfielder Natalie Simas (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection C.S.S.) and made it count as she scored from 10-yards out to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 halftime lead. The second half witnessed some brilliant playing by the OU defense. Junior Kim Moore (Georgetown, Ontario/Georgetown District) was solid in the back as the Golden Grizzlies held the Spartans to limited scoring chances in the final 45 minutes. MSU got on the board with just over three minutes remaining as Kristi Arrington scored from her back in the box to cut the deficit to just one goal at 2-1. Oakland controlled the ball for the final three minutes and went onto victory. "I thought the team did a good job keeping up with the pace of play Michigan State plays," said O'Shea. "We made adjustments and played the up-tempo game for the whole 90 minutes." Oakland will try and break the school record of eight consecutive victories Sunday, October 21 as they host Michigan. The game features two of the top four teams in the Great Lakes Region according to NSCAA as Michigan ranks three and Oakland sits at four. The game will start at 1 p.m. on the OU Soccer Field.
