The Oakland University women's soccer team won the Mid-Continent Conference Championship with a 1-0 victory over Valparaiso in Valpo Sunday afternoon, October 14. The Golden Grizzlies have won three straight regular-season titles including this years. Oakland improves to 12-2, 5-0 Mid-Con, while Valpo falls to 7-7, 3-1 Mid-Con. Both teams battled defensively throughout as they played a scoreless first half with Valparaiso outshooting Oakland 6-4. Neither team budged as the game remained scoreless after 80 minutes of play. The Golden Grizzlies finally broke through at the 84:44 minute mark as Shelly Piccirillo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/North Myer) scored from a shot in the box when Gail Wilson (Burlington, Ontario/Notre Dame Prep) sent in a cross to give OU the 1-0 victory. OU's Sarah Buckland earned her third consecutive shutout, fifth on the year, by making six saves. Buckland improves to 9-2 for the year. "We are very excited about repeating as Mid-Con champions," said O'Shea. "It's nice to go through the conference season undefeated." Oakland had 14 shots, eight corner kicks, 10 offsides, six saves and 12 fouls, while Valpo had 12 shots, four corner kicks, three offsides, eight saves and 11 fouls. Oakland comes back to Rochester to host Big Ten opponents Michigan State and Michigan. OU and MSU will meet Thursday, October 18 at 4 p.m., while Michigan comes to town Sunday, October 21 at 1 p.m. Box Score
