The Oakland University women's soccer team used a solid defensive effort as they held Central Michigan to five shots for the game and went onto a 1-0 victory in Rochester, Michigan Sunday afternoon. Oakland improves its record to 4-2-1, while CMU falls to 2-5 overall. The two teams had a solid defensive game plan and it took a diving header from OU's Jill Gibson (Novi/Madonna University) at the 35:40 minute mark of the first half to break the 0-0 tie. Gibson slipped past the defender as freshman Natalie Rodi (Shelby Twp./Eisenhower) entered a pass and Gibson knocked it in on a header. The goal was Gibson's first of the season and gave Oakland a 1-0 victory, and a three-game winning streak. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Buckland (Burlington, Ontario/Lester B. Pearson) recorded her second shutout of the season for the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland had five shots, three corner kicks, six offsides and 24 fouls. Central Michigan had five shots, two corner kicks, one save and 20 fouls. Oakland will play Detroit-Mercy Thursday, September 21 in Rochester. The match will start at 4 p.m. on the OU Soccer Field.
