The Oakland University women's soccer team was defeated by in-state rival Michigan Wednesday by the score of 3-1. Some untimely injuries throughout the game and two back-to-back goals for the Wolverines deflated the Golden Grizzlies chance for a victory. Oakland's record falls to 7-3-1, while Michigan improves its overall record to 6-4. Michigan struck first when Amber Wilson scored an unnassisted goal at the 56:24 mark in the second half. Oakland answered back with a goal of its own by Debbie Cartmell (Merseyside, England/De La Salle HS) at the 59:30 mark. Kristen Luoma (Troy/Athens HS) assisted Cartmell on the game-tying goal. Michigan then regained the lead at the 86:30 mark with Wilson's second goal of the game (assisted by Stephanie Chavez and Marie Spaccarotella). Abby Crumpton secured Michigan's lead with a goal at the 86:52 mark to give the Wolverines the win off a pass by Chavez for back to back goals. Oakland had 11 shots, two cornerkicks, eight goalkeeper save and nine fouls, while Michigan had 34 shots, 11 cornerkicks, six goalkeeper saves and 16 fouls. Oakland will return in Rochester for a Mid-Continent Conference game against Western Illinois October 7. Game time is 12 noon.
