A familiar face at Oakland University athletics events and a friend of the program for many years is Mel Gilroy. He has been involved with OU athletics during his entire career with the school, a span of 35 years.
In his position as a police officer for Oakland, Gilroy has devoted many hours of his time working with various events hosted by the athletics department. Included in those hours during the early days of the athletics program was serving as the bus driver for the men's basketball team.
Gilroy holds a BA from Oakland in History and was a recipient of the OUAA Alumni Spirit Award in 1997. In 2006 he was honored as Oakland's Outstanding Administrative Professional Employee. Gilroy also serves as Co-chair of the Ambassador Leonard Woodcock Legacy, a U.S-China exchange program at OU.
